Southern Ocean Flux Station

Overview

The Southern Ocean Flux Station (SOFS) is part of the Southern Ocean Automated Time Series Observations (SOTS) project, and of the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS).

The SOFS mooring is an OceanSITES Reference Station.

The first SOFS buoy was deployed on March 17,2010 and went adrift on March 3, 2011. SOFS-2, with the same instrumentation, was deployed on the November 24, 2011. SOFS-3 was deployed in July, 2012, went adrift in September, and was recovered in January, 2013. SOFS 4 is in prep in Woods Hole.

The SOFS buoy is equipped with two identical ASIMet systems, each with an Iridium modem provisioned for SBD messaging. Hourly averages of ASIMet data are transmitted six times daily.
Times in Iridium data files reflect the end of the hour during which averaged data was collected.
No magnetic rotation is performed.

Text files begin with comment lines that begin with % to make them Matlab-compatible. Header lines include the processing date, in local (Eastern) time.
There is also a column header line:
% year mon day yearday hour min bpr atmp sst wnde wndn hrh swr lwr precip cond sal wnds wndd
Times reflect the end of the hour during which averaged data was collected, in UTC.
